Former Australian speedster Jason Gillespie has hit back at the critics for targeting Jofra Archer. The 25-year old fast bowler added a new layer of depth to England’s already rich fast-bowling stocks. Having broken into the team in 2019, Archer played significant roles in England’s World Cup victory and a satisfactory Ashes campaign. Yet some mixed results due to injuries in New Zealand and South African tours has put him under the scanner.
Jofra Archer’s most impressive ability was his breathtaking speeds at which he delivered short-pitched deliveries in the Ashes. With more than 20 wickets in four Tests, he had put almost the entire Australian batting line-up gasping for breath. Overall, the Barbados-born pacer took 55 scalps across versions last year.
Jason Gillespie, who coaches Sussex in T20 cricket, believes that Archer is a young, passionate, hard-working, and an exciting lad. The South Australian has expressed his disappointment at the criticisms shot at him, and as a coach for Sussex, Archer has been nothing short of impressive.
“I’ve been very excited by Jofra. Obviously, he plays at Sussex and my dealings with Jofra have been nothing short of fantastic. He’s a very likeable young man, loves his cricket, very passionate, he’s very hardworking. I’ve been pretty disappointed with some of the criticism levelled at Jofra.” Gillespie said as quoted by Outlook.com
He’s got that sort of laid-back West Indian approach – Jason Gillespie
The retired Aussie pacer went on to remark that as the Caribbean, he possesses an easy-going perspective of things. The same often get mistaken by people as not putting in enough efforts. But the 45-year old backed the 25-year old, saying that he has been fantastic so far for England.
“He’s got a few gold chains, he’s got the different hairstyle, he’s got that sort of laid-back West Indian approach. He’s Barbadian-born, so he has that approach. That perception of that laid-back attitude, people assume that he doesn’t care or he’s not putting [effort] in, and that couldn’t be further from the truth. The kid lives and breathes cricket, and I think he’s been fantastic.” he added.
