Jaydev Unadkat displayed a consistent performance for Saurashtra in the recently concluded Ranji trophy season. He went on to set a new benchmark for fast-bowlers in the prestigious tournament.

Unadkat has been out-of-favour from Team India since 2018. He last donned the national jersey for a Twenty20 International (T20I) match against Bangladesh.

Outgoing coach Karsan Ghavri, who led Saurashtra to their maiden Ranji trophy triumph, feel Jaydev Unadkat deserves Team India call-up for his valuable contribution.

Ghavri, 69, reckons Unadkat has got pace and movement. He can give tough time to batsmen.

“I do feel Unadkat should get a national call-up again,” Ghavri told the Times of India. “He can bring the ball in and also take it away from the batsman. He (Unadkat) is very consistent and can keep bowling in the same area,” Ghavri said.

Jaydev Unadkat has earned never-ending accolades for his Ranji trophy performance. Ghavri also feels that Unadkat, who is a new-ball bowler, can also handle the old one well.

“He has worked on his fitness and can bowl long spells now. He can operate with the new ball and also handle the old one. So you can use him in all situations,” Ghavri added.

“Yes it’s true we have a great pace unit now. But I will say the national selectors can keep Unadkat in mind in case they want to rest somebody,” Ghavri said.

“All our pacers are right-handed. A left-hander thus provides you a different option. A right-hand left-hand combination often unsettles batsmen.”

Moreover, even Team India Test specialist Cheteshwar Pujara, who was a part of the Saurashtra team in the Ranji trophy final backed Unadkat to make a comeback to the national team.
