Jos Buttler played perhaps a Test career-saving knock last week when he starred in England’s stunning win over Pakistan in the first Test. He played a stunning knock of 75 as England registered a famous three-wicket win to take the lead in three-match series.

Before playing the match-winning knock, he was under immense pressure to deliver with the bat. His poor wicketkeeping earlier in the game did not help his cause either. The World Cup-winner had dropped two catches and missed a stumping in Pakistan’s first innings, with two of those blunders coming when Shan Masood, who went on to score 156, was on 45.

But he made up for it with a fine display with the bat. After scoring a crucial 38 in the first innings, he scored 75 in the second while sharing a 139-run stand with Chris Woakes as the hosts rallied from 117-5 to reach their target of 277 on day four.

Jos Buttler overcame personal tragedy to power England to win:

What makes Jos Buttler’s innings even more special is that he was going through a tough and emotional phase while playing the Test. His father Johnny was admitted to hospital on Friday evening which was the third day of the match.

The England star’s father was later allowed to go home after a series of tests and scans. Jos Buttler’s sister Joanne Vickers revealed the news on Twitter and said she is incredibly proud of her brother given the fact that he was told a night before his match-winning knock that his father was in the hospital.

“Pretty f proud given the last three days and being told at 10pm last night your dad was in hospital. That was for you Johnny. Come on England,” she wrote on Twitter.

And after the win, England captain Joe Root also praised Jos Buttler for showing such a character, saying: “It says a huge amount about Jos as a person that he was able to park that.

“I’m sure it’s a very difficult thing to deal with. It’s one of his big traits — big pressure brings out big performances in him. He can deal with those high-pressure situations on the field but to have that external pressure must have been very difficult for him.

“So that’s why Jos Buttler is in this team. It shows his strength of character, strength of mind and being able to read those situations. I think this could be a real stepping stone in his career,” he added.
