New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson is ecstatic over their victory against the Virat Kohli-led India in the first Test of the two-match series in Wellington.

Since the inception of the ICC World Test Championship last year, Kohli and his boys have lost the first game after winning seven consecutive games on the trot.

The Kiwis avenged their T20 series defeat in style as they clean swept India in the ODIs by a margin of 3-0. Going into the Test series, India knew that they had to win both the games as to emerge victorious at the end of the tour, but a dismal batting display from their batters continued their winless streak.

“Bouncing back isn’t a term that we use within our group. You can get carried away thinking about results (especially) when you have a number of poor ones and sometimes the want (urge) for a good one can be a distraction towards getting (achieving) it,” Williamson said after the first Test.

The Kiwi skipper Williamson, who also was the top-scorer for his side with a well-made 89, seemed satisfied with the performances of each player of his team.

“So it’s about focussing on things that are important. The roles that give us the best chance of success and if we do that, the result manifests and I think that’s what we saw in this game and that was what was pleasing,” Williamson said.

Team India had a poor show of batsmanship in the first Test against New Zealand. They were bundled up for 165 runs in the first innings.

This led the Kiwis to prosper on a 183-run margin. Indian batsmen were demolished for 191 runs and New Zealand had a target of nine runs to chase in their second innings. They did so without losing a wicket and handed India their first defeat in the format since last year.
