South African pacer Dale Steyn called it quits from the longest format of the game earlier this week.  Tributes poured in for the pacer but he received a hilarious message from New Zealand pacer Kane Williamson, who posted a special memento for Steyn.

“The box @dalesteyn cracked back in 2013 – OUCH! Kind of him to sign it after the match though. Congratulations on an incredible Test career mate #steyn #alwayswearabox,” he wrote on Instagram.

Steyn finished his Test career as South Africa’s most successful pacer in the longest format of the game with 439 scalps. He went past Shaun Pollock’s 421 scalps in the Boxing Day Test against Pakistan last year.

Although it took him long time to add to his 400+ scalps as injuries kept him out of the game. In November 2016, he broke his shoulder and sat out for more than a year from the longest format of the game.

Finally, when he made his comeback for the home series against India, he suffered another injury and sat out again. Later in 2018, he broke Pollock’s record and in 2019, went past Kapil Dev’s 434 Test scalps.

Steyn will continue to play ODI and T20I format. He was a part of South Africa’s World Cup 2019 squad but was ruled out early in the tournament due to a shoulder injury that he had suffered during his two-match stint with Royal Challengers Bangalore in IPL 2019.

Steyn will surely be available to play next two back to back T20 World Cups and will it be a big boost for South Africa if he will be available for selection for the championships.

For now, he looks set to tour India for the three-match T20I series that takes place next month. South Africa play three T20Is and three Test matches against India. The team will surely have new faces in the Test squad.
