KL Rahul Named Vice-Captain As India Announce ODI Squad For Australia Tour

India, on Monday, announced their squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series in Australia. Team India are also scheduled to play three T20Is and four Tests in Australia later this year. The much-awaited tour will kickstart with the three-match ODI series.

Rohit Sharma, who has not played for India since the T20I series in New Zealand in earlier this year, is not a part of the squad. The right-handed batsman is currently in the UAE for the ongoing IPL but is out of action since last week due to a hamstring injury.

In his absence, KL Rahul has been named the vice-captain. Shubman Gill, who had made his ODI debut last year during the tour of New Zealand, has earned a recall. Mayank Agarwal is also in the side and can open the innings alongside senior opener Shikhar Dhawan.

In another big decision, Rishabh Pant has been dropped from the ODI squad. Rahul , who is keeping the wickets since the home series against Australia earlier this year, is set to don the wicketkeeping gloves again. Prithvi Shaw has been dropped from the ODI squad too while Bhuvneshwar Kumar misses out due to an injury.

Hardik Pandya is also in the side. The allrounder has not played for India since last September. He had made a comeback in March for the series against South Africa but the series was eventually called off.

India’s tour of Australia will start with the three-match ODI series. The first two ODIs on November 27 and 29 will be played at the Sydney Cricket Ground, while the third ODI and first T20I will take place at the Manuka Oval. Thereafter, the teams return to Sydney for the remaining two T20Is.

As far as the Test series is concerned, the pink ball Test is scheduled to be held at Adelaide Oval between December 17-21. This will also remain as the backup venue for the Boxing Day Test, if Melbourne is not able to host it due to Covid-19 restrictions. The final two Tests will be held in Sydney (January 7-11) finally Brisbane (January 15-19).
