As India and Bangladesh players gear up to play the first T20I in Delhi, former India captain Bishan Singh Bedi has expressed its concerns over the pollution level in the city. The rapid spike in Delhi’s air quality index after Diwali has become a cause of concern. The overall air quality index (AQI) crossed the 400 mark on Wednesday, raising concerns among residents of the city.
An AQI between 0-50 is considered “good”, 51-100 “satisfactory”, 101-200 “moderate”, 201-300 “poor”, 301-400 “very poor”, and 401-500 “severe”. Above 500 is “severe-plus emergency” category. Recent media reports suggest that Team India are unlikely to train outdoors while being in the city. The players are more than likely to stick to gym session before the series-opener.
Bishan Singh Bedi took to Twitter to express his concerns over the effect of polluted air on the players, writing:
“In the present state of ‘hazardous air quality’ in Delhi Let’s spare a thought for Ind/B’Desh teams having to play T-20 on 3rd Nov at Kotla…Let’s accept our man-made frailties w/Mother Nature..& ask does Delhi deserve any sporting event o International standard at all..?!!!”

When India hosted Sri Lanka for a Test in December 2017, the visiting players had complained about the conditions. The players had found it difficult to breathe and had come out wearing masks. In 2016, two Ranji Trophy matches in Delhi had to be cancelled due to smog.

Meanwhile, environmentalists have raised concerns over cricketers playing outdoors with the increase in pollution levels in Delhi. The environmentalists said that playing outdoors is even more dangerous for the individuals.
“This puts our sportspersons at even greater risk when they play outdoors. Any match played outdoors harms the health and very lives of the players and it is irresponsible to schedule such sporting activities during times of such toxic air quality,” they were quoted as saying by the PTI.
