It was not a good day for Mumbai Indians’ (MI) Jaydev Unadkat as MS Dhoni of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) hit him for 16 runs in the last over and helped his team win by 3 wickets in the 33rd match of the IPL 2022 which was played at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on April 21.

This was a crucial match for MI as they had come in winless into this encounter, but unfortunately, MS Dhoni showed his old heroics with the bat and helped CSK make the 17 runs needed in the last over to cross the finish line and hand the Rohit Sharma led side their 7th straight loss, a record in Indian Premier League history.

CSK had bowled first after captain Ravindra Jadeja won the toss. MI was kept to 155/7 in 20 overs made mostly thanks to 51* from Tilak Varma and 32 from Suryakumar Yadav. This was a luxurious total given that Mukesh Choudhary had removed both Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan for ducks in the first over of the match and then accounted for Dewald Brevis for 4 runs to send the five-time champions into a tizzy.

Well, Mumbai Indians’ Daniel Sams returned the favor in kind as he removed Ruturaj Gaikwad of CSK on the first ball of the CSK’s chase. Their innings was stabilized mostly due to Ambati Rayudu who made 40 and Robin Uthappa made 30 runs.

However, Jaydev Unadkat picked two crucial wickets to jolt the CSK and though Dwaine Pretorius made 22 in 14 balls, CSK still needed 17 runs in the last over. But the good thing for CSK was that MS Dhoni was still at the crease.

Unadkat started off well, taking the wicket of Pretorius and giving Dwayne Bravo a single off the next ball. But this brought one of the best finishers in the world, MS Dhoni to the crease and he showed a masterclass in finishing matches. He calmly hit the 3rd ball straight for a six and then hit a four on the 4th ball down the fine leg.

The next ball saw Dhoni and Bravo taking a quick double, bringing down the required runs to 4 off the last ball. Unadkat instead of bowling it wide or a bouncer, bowled a full toss on Dhoni’s pads and the master whipped it past the short fine leg and the ball went to the boundary and CSK won the match by 3 wickets.
