England suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of Pakistan in the first Test of the two-match Test series at Lord’s. But, they came back pretty strongly to beat visitors in the Headingley Test by an innings and 55 runs.

It was a thoroughly entertaining performance which allowed them to make a strong comeback and level the series one each.

Following their well-earned victory may experts and former greats are already looking at the long-term prospect specifically to 2021 in Brisbane.

The first of Ashes series scheduled to be played Down Under will be played in Brisbane.

The Director of England Cricket, Andrew Strauss has just made his plans which he might implement regarding the selection of the national side for overseas Tests.

England has failed to win any of their last 13 away Tests. The last Ashes series in Australia saw them losing quite convincingly by 4-0. They were unable to put up a show and eventually were outplayed in every department of the game.

The time is appropriate to look at the broader picture and groom some young talents which will help them rise against the tide.

Furthermore, it will be a great challenge for England Cricket Board (ECB) to manage the three greats who are nearing the twilight of their career. It includes the likes of Alastair Cook, James Anderson and Stuart Broad in particular.

Selectors need to get their balance right. They are well aware of the fact that the three big players will be needed to influence some of the relative newcomers in the form of Dom Bess and Keaton Jennings.

However, at the same time, the youngsters will require the experience of playing overseas Tests ahead of the Ashes Down Under in 2021.

The skipper of the Test team, Joe Root, and all-rounder Ben Stokes is expected to strengthen the care. Root is arguably the best Test batsman in the modern generation.

The performance of these two will be crucial if Eland harbour hopes of doing well Down Under.

Meanwhile, former English opener Atherton selected Jonny Bairstow ahead of Jos Buttler in his team for the 2021 Ashes Test scheduled to be held in Brisbane.

There will be tough competition from Buttler. Both players are assets to England. They are brilliant batsmen and on their day has the ability to decimate any bowling attack. Buttler is the more attacking batsman while Bairstow is little more restraint.

Atherton discussed the potential options which England might employ in the 2021 Ashes. He revealed the team XI he would field.
