The 2014 India tour of New Zealand was one of the most frustrating times for an Indian cricket fan purely because of the number of times the MS Dhoni-led Men in Blue squandered opportunities to win a match. And, the 2-match Test series was an absolute zenith of those missed chances.

After having lost the first Test in Auckland by 40 runs from what seemed like a pretty commanding position, India went one step ahead and gave away yet another opportunity to win a game of cricket at the Basin Reserve in Wellington.

Batting first, New Zealand were shot out for 192 after the duo of Ishant Sharma [6-51] and Mohammed Shami [4-70] wracked havoc on their batting-unit in favorable conditions. India responded with 438 with Shikhar Dhawan and Ajinkya Rahane scoring 98 and 118 respectively.

The Indian pacers were at it again in the second innings, reducing New Zealand to 5-96. But then Ishant Sharma and Virat Kohli dropped back-to-back catches of Brendon McCullum and post that the New Zealand captain went on to shellack a whirlwind triple-hundred.

One of those catches were off the bowling of Mohammed Shami. And, the dropped chance frustrated Shami to an extent that he proceeded to bowl a harmless bouncer that proceeded to go over captain MS Dhoni’s head for four byes.

“On the penultimate ball before lunch, some batsman edged and the catch was dropped. Last ball then I bowled a bouncer which went over Mahi bhai’s head.” Mohammed Shami recounted.

Not impressed by Shami’s answer, MS Dhoni then proceeded to school the Indian pacer.

“Mahi bhai ne mujhe thodese tight language mein bola, ‘Dekh beta, bohot log aaye mere saamne. Bohot log khel ke chale gaye jhut mat bol. Bete tumhare senior hai tumhare captain hai hum. Ye bevakoof kisi aur ko banana.”

The quote roughly translates to- Mahi bhai told me strictly- ‘See, I have seen many players come and go during my career. Don’t lie to me . I am your senior and your captain. Don’t fool me’)

Coming back to the Test match, Brendon McCullum went on to accumulate 352 runs with BJ Watling for the sixth wicket to help New Zealand draw the Test and take the series 1-0.
