Gone are those days when bowlers were not expected to score runs. In today’s cricket, almost every tail-ender is expected to contribute with the bat. But Mohammed Shami’s recent form is turning out to be an exception by a mile. The India fast-bowler has been performing awfully with the bat. While not much is expected from Shami, he is making sure that the team-management finally tells him to put some focus on his batting.

While his teammates had a good day with the bat on day two of the ongoing second Test against West Indies, Shami had another poor outing. He was dismissed for a duck by Rahkeem Cornwall. It was the sixth consecutive innings that the Indian cricketer failed to get past zero. Shami has not been able to face more than three balls in an innings in his last six outings.

Mohammed Shami’s last six innings:

0(2) vs West Indies (Kingston)

0(1) vs West Indies (North Sound)

0*(3) vs Australia (Melbourne)

0*(0) vs Australia (Perth)

0(1) vs Australia (Perth)

0(1) vs Australia (Adelaide)

Fortunately for India, Mohammed Shami’s failure with the bat did not cost them much as they piled up 416. Hanuma Vihari scored his maiden century while Ishant Sharma his first Test half-century to help India post a formidable total.

Vihari was the last man to be dismissed when Jason Holder sent him back for 111. Vihari faced 225 deliveries, striking 16 boundaries and shared a 112-run stand with Ishant for the eighth wicket. Ishant was out for 57.

Jasprit Bumrah then made his mark with the ball. The India pace spearhead ran through the West Indies batting lineup to leave them staring at yet another big defeat. Bumrah picked up a ha-trick and finished the day with 6 wickets for just 16 runs. West Indies, nonetheless, were 87 for 7 when the day ended.
