England left-arm spinner Monty Panesar enjoyed a substantial amount of success against India. The English cricket team toured India for a four-match series in the winter of 2012 and went on to script a heist for the ages as Alastair Cook became the first captain from his country to win a Test series in India after a gap of 28 years.

Monty Panesar, who had made his Test debut against the Indians six years prior to the 2012 four-match rubber was one of the spearheads in England turning the tables on India after having lost the first Test in Ahmedabad by nine wickets. On tracks that were tailor-made for spinners, Panesar and Graeme Swann spun the famed Indian batting unit into a tizzy to help the visitors’ script victories in Mumbai and Kolkata.

Commenting on Sachin Tendulkar, against whom Panesar had a fair share of success in both 2006 and 2012 Panesar said that Indian genius was ruthless and once he got in, he usually scored big.

“Sachin was just ruthless. Once he got in, he would look to score big. But like any other batsman, he was vulnerable. He was on a different wavelength once set,” Monty Panesar, the former England spinner told PTI.

He added: “It was just hard to get Sachin out. With him, you were always like which gear he is going to take but you had to be competitive. Having said that, I backed myself to get him out.”

Speaking on Virender Sehwag, Monty hailed the ‘Nawab of Najafgarh’ as the most destructive batsman of his era, besides stating that courtesy Rahul Dravid’s penchant to bat for long hours, it sometimes felt that his bat was wider than anyone else.

“And Sehwag was simply amazing, the most destructive batsman at that time,” said the left-arm spinner.

He added: “Dravid was another great, like the wall they used to say. That was the period you had batters who would just bat long. Just ruthless. With him, you can kind of felt like his bat was wider than anyone else’s,”

Monty Panesar played 50 Tests for England in which he claimed a total of 167 wickets which included 12 five-wicket hauls and a couple of ten-fors.
