MS Dhoni was seen celebrating the 11th anniversary of the Indian team’s 2011 ICC World Cup win with his Chennai Super Kings (CSK) teammates. Dhoni was the captain when India defeated Sri Lanka in a closely fought final at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on this day, April 2, 11 years ago.

Dhoni’s team lost only one game in the whole tournament, to South Africa, while their encounter against England ended up in a high-scoring tie. India defeated Australia in the quarter-final of the tournament in Ahmedabad, knocking out the defending champions and keeping them from reaching the finals for the first time since the 1992 World Cup.

In the semi-finals, India faced off against the arch-rivals in Pakistan at Mohali and Sachin Tendulkar won the Player of the Match for his 85-run knock, while the Indian bowlers did the job of defending the total well as India made it into the finals for the first time since the 2003 world Cup.

In the finals, Sri Lanka batted first after the infamous double toss and put on a 275-run target for India to chase with Mahela Jayawardene scoring a memorable century, while anchoring the innings.

For India, it was Gautam Gambhir, who made 97, and Virat Kohli who contributed 30 odd runs after Lasith Malinga had given the Men in Blue a heart attack removing Virender Sehwag for a duck and Sachin Tendulkar early as well.

Then as history says, MS Dhoni promoted himself over the eventual Player of the Tournament Yuvraj Singh and made a brilliant 91*, adding more than 100 runs with Gambhir, who fell 3 runs short of a match-winning inning. Dhoni then hit Nuwan Kulasekara for a six to win the match, a moment which has been etched in Indian cricket history with gold.
