Former Indian wicketkeeper-batsman, Deep Dasgupta has said that MS Dhoni should have kept playing domestic cricket if he wished to return to the India team. Dhoni was last seen in the Indian colours in the semi-final of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019. Unfortunately, India lost the game to New Zealand and were eliminated from the competition. Since then, Dhoni has been away from the Indian team.
His return was much anticipated with the return of IPL 2020 this year as e was back to the field sweating it hard for the Chennai Super Kings. However, the BCCI had to postpone the tournament until April 15 due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. And, this has again given way to speculations on Dhoni’s future with team India.
Now, Deep Dasgupta has said that Dhoni’s return to the India team is complicated and he should perform well in the IPL to gain a berth for the T20 World Cup later this year in Australia.
MS Dhoni Should’ve Kept Playing Domestic Cricket: Deep Dasgupta
“See, MS Dhoni has not played competitive cricket for close to 9 months now. He played the World Cup and he has not played since. I don’t know or no one has seen him play in the last 9 months. On what basis can a call be taken?” Deep Dasgupta said.
“Ideally, he should have played domestic cricket. I can understand if he did not want to play Ranji Trophy. He could have played Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy. He should be playing matches,” he added.
Deep Dasgupta Believes MS Dhoni Has To Play To Get Back
“If you’re talking about 9 months, then go back to 1 year, go back to 2 years. You can even bring Viru [Virender Sehwag] back you can even bring Sachin [Tendulkar] back,” Dasgupta said.
“He has to play. If he is good enough, if he is able to do the job, then he can take his place in the side. But then again, we have not seen him play. If he had played the domestic tournaments, then his time away would have been just more than 3 months. That’s fine but not playing for more than 9 months, it’s difficult to take a call,” he concluded.
