Former India captain MS Dhoni is currently on a break from the game and no one, including the team management, knows when he will make his comeback to international cricket. He is yet to retire from the game and it is likely that Dhoni will take a call on his career after next year’s IPL, where he will be leading Chennai Super Kings.

If Dhoni does well, he will be part of the World Cup team but he might be ignored if he fails to come up with performances.

Amidst this, India head coach Ravi Shastri has hinted that Dhoni is probably done with ODI cricket and might only play T20 cricket now. In a recent conversation with India Today, Shastri said that Dhoni is not keen on one-day stuff.

“I think he will play the IPL and take it from there. If he has an outstanding IPL I don’t rule anything out with that kind of experience with that kind of knowledge of the sport. It’s sensible (the break). I like the time when he is starting to play again. I don’t think he is too keen on the one-day stuff. He is finished with Test cricket. T20 is an option. It’s a format that is tailor-made for him. But will his body be able to cope with the demands only he will answer,” he told India Today.

Dhoni’s last international appearance came in World Cup 2019’s semi-final against New Zealand. He took a break from the game during West Indies series but was expected to return for the home series against South Africa. Dhoni was unavailable for selection for Bangladesh series as well and isn’t a part of ongoing West Indies series.

Despite the selection panel saying that they have moved on from Dhoni, there is a comeback on the cards for him but that totally depends on his form during the next IPL season.

The next edition of T20 World Cup will be played in 2021.
