Former KKR Team Director Explores Contrasting Captaincy Styles of Gautam Gambhir And MS Dhoni

MS Dhoni and Gautam Gambhir are two of the most polarising figures in Indian cricket. While MS Dhoni, the captain, boasts of a luxurious resume, having led India to the summit of 2007 World T20, 2011 World Cup, and 2013 Champions Trophy. On the other hand, Gautam Gambhir played a significant role with the bat to hand the men in blue their first T20 World Cup and a 50-over World Cup after 28 years.

As far as Gautam Gambhir’s captaincy tenure goes, he has never captained India full-time. However, as a stand-in-captain, the 38-year old has a perfect record in six matches. MS Dhoni and Gautam Gambhir are also some of the most successful captains in the IPL. Dhoni has guided Chennai Super Kings to three IPL titles while Gambhir has ushered Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to a couple.

Meanwhile, former KKR team director Joy Bhattacharya has thrown light on the contrasting captaincy styles of the duo. Speaking about Dhoni, Joy conceded that he is calm and composed, who would ask his players to give their best and the favourable result would follow. Dhoni has a relaxed mind to this extent that he would sort it out.

“Dhoni is Mr. Cool but Gambhir can never be cool. So What do you say when you have somebody like a Dhoni? He’s the coolest guy, they play chilled cricket, don’t worry about results, they’ll come just play cricket. He’s so calm that he’ll sort it out.” Joy stated in the show “22 Yarns” with Gaurav Kapur.

On the other hand, Gambhir is the total opposite. The cricketer-turned-politician explicitly shows all the passion he has got and wears his heart on his sleeves. Joy has asserted the fact Gambhir is someone, who would take a bullet for his side.

“You can’t play that narrative with Gautam. So what do you do when you have a Gautam in the team? You don’t say that he’s captain cool, he’s the guy who will take a bullet for his players, he’s got all passion.” he added.
