Fitness was never an issue for MS Dhoni since the time he made his debut way back in 2004. Throughout his career, he has been one of the fittest men on the ground. At a time when cricketers across the globe are struggling to keep up with the gruelling demands of modern cricket, Dhoni has looked class apart.

Throughout his career, the World Cup-winning skipper has done the unforgiving job of wicketkeeping but it has rarely affected his fitness.  Even at 36, the veteran cricketer is more than capable of giving his younger fellow cricketers a run for their money.

And not surprisingly, Dhoni has made a big sacrifice to achieve the extraordinary fitness. In a recent interview, the former India skipper revealed he revealed he had to give up on his favourite foods to attain the high level of fitness.

“Yes the food habits have changed. When I made my debut, it used to be butter chicken, naan and milkshakes with lots of chocolates and soft drinks. Once I turned 28, the chocolate was off, the milk shake was off. After (quitting) Test cricket, all the healthy food came in. The breads, the kebabs all those things came in,” Dhoni said at an event in Mumbai.

Dhoni further revealed he has started to hit the gym but does not do it on a regular basis.

“I realised I am also slightly different. I need to understand my body. This year I started gyming. But not all the time. Once the IPL started, I was not in the gym anymore,” he said.

“I just did some rowing. In Chennai, I had a rowing machine in the room. After breakfast, I’d start rowing. It was more functional for me. When I am playing cricket, I don’t want to do a lot of gym. In between the two series when there is a break, I hit the gym now. Eighty per cent of how you want to be or what you want to be is because of food; Twenty per cent is because of training,” he added.

Dhoni, meanwhile, had a brilliant IPL this year. He led from the front as Chennai Super Kings won the title for the third time. The 36-year old enjoyed a stunning season with the bat, amassing 455 runs in 16 games.
