The 1983 World Cup final hero Mohinder Amarnath believes former Indian skipper MS Dhoni should play domestic circuit for India selection. MS Dhoni is going through a rough patch of form and has been struggling to hit the ground running in the recent past. However, Dhoni has opted out of the domestic circuit as he is spending time with his family.

Meanwhile, Dhoni is all but a sure for the upcoming World Cup 2019. However, his lack of form can be a bane for the Indian team. In fact, it is well known that MS Dhoni is a big player, though his lack of confidence can lead to the team’s downfall. Thus, it is imperative for the Indian team that MS Dhoni finds his ‘Midas Touch‘ back.

Runs in the middle can make a difference for MS Dhoni

It is cognisance of the fact that the senior Indian players have opted out to play for state team in the domestic circuit. Subsequently, Amarnath wants Dhoni to get back to the basics.

“Every individual is different but one thing I have always believed in is that if you want to play for India you have to play for your state as well. I think they (BCCI) should change this policy altogether. A lot of senior players don’t play domestic cricket,” Amarnath told PTI on sidelines of an event.

In fact, former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar had also spoken on the same lines that MS Dhoni should play for Jharkhand. Amarnath believes the Indian board should make an eligibility criterion.

“The BCCI should make it an eligibility criterion. Not only a number of games, but you should also be playing regularly for your state if you are not playing for India and not only just before the India selection. Then only you can judge how good the guy is playing. Whatever you have achieved is all in the past. What is important is current form,” said the hero of India’s World Cup triumph in 1983.

“Even if you are playing one format, you should be playing all formats at least in domestic cricket to be considered for selection,” the former selector said.

It makes sense for MS Dhoni to go back into the domestic circuit and get back his confidence. In fact, it is well known that one can hit a hundred balls in the nets. However, the runs scored in the middle can give a shot in the arm to a player’s confidence.
