Indian opener Mayank Agarwal is on the cusp of achieving an elite record if he manages to score 36 runs in the second Test match versus New Zealand at Christchurch. The Men in Blue were defeated by the Kiwis as they took a 1-0 lead in the two-match Test series.

Agarwal though was India’s best batsman registering scores of 35 and 59 respectively, in his two innings in the first match. He will like to keep the momentum going to achieve a personal milestone as well as helping India claw back in the series.

The right-handed opener will surpass stalwarts such as Cheteshwar Pujara and Sunil Gavaskar, if he scores 36 runs in the next match, thereby becoming the second-fastest Indian player to 1000 runs in Test cricket.

Former Indian great Vinod Kambli holds the record for being the fastest one, as he achieved the feat in just 14 innings. Pujara and Gavaskar surpassed the 1000 runs record in their 18th and 21st Test innings respectively.

If Agarwal manages to score 36 or more runs in the next Test vs New Zealand, the 29-year-old will surpass Pujara and Gavaskar, by achieving the feat in his 16th or 17th innings, depending on which inning he scores the required margin.

India have lost four consecutive matches to New Zealand on the trot and will like to regain their winning run in the last match of their tour.

Despite a heavy defeat in the first Test, Indian coach Ravi Shastri feels it could be a blessing in disguise for Virat Kohli’s men.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, the 57-year-old Indian coach said that the recent defeats have been a shakeup, which could, in turn, open up India’s mindset.

“We were outplayed in the first Test but I always believe that a shake-up like that is good. It opens your mindset,” said Shastri.

He further added, “If you have not tasted defeat you can have a closed or fixed mindset. Here, when you see what has happened, it is good, it gives you opportunities to learn. You know what New Zealand are doing and what to expect. It’s a good lesson and the boys are up for the challenge.”

The second and final Test between India and New Zealand begins from February 29 at Christchurch.
