New Zealand consigned India to a 3-0 series ODI defeat in Mount Maunganui after facing a clean sweep in the shortest format of the game. The Black Caps easily chased down the score of 297 with five wickets in hand in the final ODI at Bay Oval.

In all three matches, India lost it from being in positions of power, thanks to the hosts’ brilliance in all the departments. Despite missing their key players, the Kiwis had more than enough depth to inflict a resounding series defeat on the Men in Blue.

Ross Taylor was named as the Player of the Series for scoring one century and a half-century, averaging a whopping 194 in three innings. Henry Nicholls received the Man of the Match award for the third ODI while crafting 80 off 103 balls that set the tone for the chase.

The focus now shifts to the two-Test series that starts from the 21st of February at the Basin Reserve in Wellington.

New Zealand vs India 2020, ODI Series: India Players’ Performance Ratings –

Prithvi Shaw – 5/10

In the absence of Rohit Sharma, debutant Prithvi Shaw had some big shoes to fill right from the outset. In his debut series, the 20-year old scores amassed scores of 20, 24, 40 which can be considered as promising.

However, his failure to convert even one of those into a considerable score was disappointing. He receives a rating of 5/10.

Mayank Agarwal – 2/10

On the back of a prolific Test career so far, Mayank Agarwal also made his ODI debut in the series.

However, much to everybody’s disappointment, the 28-year old’s only significant score was 32 crafted in the first match.

With four runs from the next two innings, Agarwal may come nowhere near the ODI team from after this series.

Nevertheless, he gets a rating of 2/10.

Virat Kohli – 5/10

A lot depended on Virat Kohli in the absence of Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma in the side to guide the youngsters around him. Not only did Kohli struggled with his form in the series, but also seemed clueless as to the leader.

The Indian captain’s scores regressed with every outing, making 51, 15, and 9 in the final ODI to end the series on a frustrating note.

Kohli gets a rating of 5/10.

Shreyas Iyer – 8.5/10

At the end of the Australia ODIs, doubts still loomed on whether Shreyas Iyer has sealed his place as India’s number four batsman.

The series against New Zealand sealed the belief as he compiled his maiden ODI hundred and two-half centuries for good measure.

As a batsman, who is starting to find his feet in international cricket, he couldn’t have done any better. Hence, the 25-year old with 217 runs in three innings earns a rating of 8.5/10.

KL Rahul – 7/10

There are only a few things that KL Rahul cannot do currently. After a prolific series against Australia and five T20Is against Kiwis, the Karnataka lad crafted an explosive inning of 88 to start the series.

He scored a century in the third ODI.

However, he failed gloriously in the do or die game in Auckland where India conceded the series. For 204 runs in three games, he receives a rating of 7/10.

Kedar Jadhav – 4/10

Kedar Jadhav’s selection was highly debatable as the finisher in the first game instead of Manish Pandey; however, he silenced them for a brief period by scoring a breezy 26 off 15 balls.

Sadly, in the second game, he succumbed under pressure, managing only 9 off 27 before being dropped for the final ODI.

It can also be noted that the captain overlooked the veteran’s bowling skills, especially the same could have worked in breaking the partnership between Ross Taylor and Tom Latham before they ran away with the game.

Manish Pandey – 7/10

Manish Pandey played just the one game in the series after reigning supreme in the five T20Is. India drafted the 30-year old for the dead rubber in Mount Maunganui and contributed a hand of 42 to put 107 for the fifth wicket.

He gets a rating of 7/10.

Ravindra Jadeja – 7/10

Ravindra Jadeja has quickly evolved as a reliable all-rounder for India in recent months.

With the bat, the 31-year old waged a lone fight in the second ODI only to lose the match eventually by 22 runs.

Jadeja also bowled disciplined and miserly spells; however, could pick up only two wickets in three innings.

Shardul Thakur – 4.5/10

Plenty of debates swirl around Shardul Thakur on whether he deserves this many chances.

The 28-year old finished as the highest wicket-taker in the series and presently has four wickets. But those four wickets have come at the cost of plenty of runs.

In all three games, he has ended with an economy rate of an excess of six. The Mumbai pacer gets a rating of 4.5/10.

Kuldeep Yadav – 3/10

One could not help but think how did it all come down so rapidly for the left-arm spinner.

The Kiwi batsmen, especially Latham and Taylor, nailed the sweep shot against Kuldeep’s excess flight.

Kuldeep Yadav’s figures at the end of the first game read 10-0-84-2 that lead to him eventually getting dropped for the final two ODIs.

Mohammed Shami – 4/10

One could not make much of Mohammed Shami in the ODI series versus New Zealand.

The Bengal pacer played only one game and not even as effective as him a speedster could breach past the duo of Latham and Taylor in a crunch situation, conceding 63 runs in less than ten overs.

India decided to rest him after that ahead of the two-Test series.

Jasprit Bumrah – 4/10

Similar to Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah is one of the most indispensable players for India, irrespective of the format. But he endured a horrendous series as well, going wicketless in all the three games and even going for boundaries in the death overs.

He receives a rating of 4/10.

Yuzvendra Chahal – 8/10

India swapped Yuzvendra Chahal for the final two ODIs for Kuldeep Yadav, whose horrendous form lead him to pick two wickets for a staggering 84 runs. And the right-arm leg-spinner made the difference straight away, picking six wickets in two games. But being the lone wicket-taker hasn’t helped India much.

However, he earns a rating of 8/10.

Navdeep Saini

Navdeep Saini was roped in for Mohammed Shami for the final two matches of the series. But he couldn’t make a significant difference either, going wicketless in the 18 overs he bowled.

Not only did he go wicketless, but the 27-year old couldn’t make a difference in terms of curbing the run-flow.

But he played an invaluable inning of 45 in a losing cause that gave India a small shot at victory. He receives a rating of 4/10.
