It was definitely not the type of series Pakistan would have expected in their first overseas assignment since the historic triumph in the Champions Trophy but as they lost the fifth and final One-Day International against New Zealand to get whitewashed.

Pakistan’s batsmen once again failed to deliver, as the Sarfraz Ahmed-led side was bowled out for 256 while chasing 272 to avoid a humiliating whitewash. Pakistan’s chase got derailed as early as the 17th over when half of their team was back in the pavilion with just 57 runs on the board. Matt Henry was the destructor-in-chief early on, rocking Pakistan’s top-order by dismissing their top three cheaply.

Umar Amin was the first depart for just two before Fakhar Zaman (12) and Babar Azam (10) also joined him in the dressing room. Haris Sohail (63) and Shadab Khan (54) revived Pakistan’s hopes by sharing a 105-run stand for the sixth wicket, but once the former was sent back by Mitchell Santner, Pakistan’s challenge fizzled out.

Faheem Ashraf, Aamer Yamin and Mohammed Nawaz played handy knocks, but it was not enough for the reigning Champions Trophy champions to avoid a humiliating whitewash.

Earlier, Martin Guptill’s century and Ross Taylor’s fifty guided the hosts to a competitive 271 for seven in the allotted 50 overs. The Black Caps were looking primed to post more than 300 after racing away to 213 for two but losing wickets in a cluster towards the end of the innings stopped them from reaching even close to 300. But in the end, the 271-run score turned out to be more than enough.
