Former England wicketkeeper-batsman, Paul Nixon is known to be a ‘verbal’ customer behind the wickets. He has had the reputation of being an aggressive lad behind the wickets and exchange a lot of words with his opponents over the years. However, he has always termed this as banter rather than sledging. He says he used it to get under the skin of his opponents.

However, sometimes our own missile can backfire us. Likewise, Paul Nixon also narrated a hilarious story wherein former England batting great Graham Gooch gave Nixon a taste of his own medicine in a county game. In an exclusive interview with CricketAddictor.com, Nixon shed light on the banter that cost him in a game.

Paul Nixon Reveals Why He Was Extremely Vocal In The Gentleman’s Game

“Certainly the banter cost me. I felt there were a lot of weak characters in cricket, I felt there were a lot of guys who were quite sensitive and where I was brought up, it was a very tough environment, people were very strong vocally, challenged you mentally, and it was about winning cricket matches. I brought that local fire in my belly, I wanted to win badly. I wanted to be in the battle and I enjoyed it,” Paul Nixon said.

“What I loved about other sports, certainly Rugby is that these guys hammered each other into pieces and fought for every inch on the pitch,” Nixon said.

“I enjoy testing of everything. It has cost me before just like everybody. I remember Graham Gooch scoring a brilliant hundred against Leicestershire many years ago and then he turned around and walked off at 150 and said, ‘Well Nickson, you kept me going my mate..well done!!’ It can be a long game, its 4-day cricket so you need a bit of spark,” Paul Nixon concluded.

Gooch went on to become one of the greatest-ever England players finishing his career with more than 13000 runs across all formats in international cricket.
