With Rohit Sharma set to miss at least the first Test against Australia provided that he passes the fitness test first, the Indian team-management is likely to choose one between Shubman Gill and Prithvi Shaw as the opening partner for incumbent Mayank Agarwal.

Thus, the ongoing three-match practice game between India A and Australia A was a chance for both the youngsters to prove themselves and stake a claim for a place in the Test playing XI. As expected, the Indian team-management sent them out as openers after Ajinkya Rahane won the toss and elected to bat first at Drummoyne Oval, Sydney.

But both the openers failed, much to the worry of the team-management. Neither Prithvi Shaw nor Shubman Gill could open their accounts. Shubman Gill was the first to depart, falling to Michael Neser for a first-ball duck. On the other hand, Prithvi Shaw was sent by James Pattinson for an eight-ball duck.

Here is a clip showing Prithvi Shaw and Shubman Gill’s dismissals:

Keeping their latest performance aside, Prithvi Shaw could be preferred ahead of Gill thanks to his Test experience. Prithvi Shaw has played 4 Tests so far, scoring one century and two fifties including one in the testing conditions of New Zealand. Gill, on the other hand, is yet to make his debut in Tests.

Talking about the ongoing game, India A were reeling at 131 for 6 at the time of compiling this report. Cheteshwar Pujara looked impressive before James Pattinson ended his 54-run knock. Captain Rahane, on the other hand, is holding firm from one end and was unbeaten on 45 at the time of writing this report.
