Rahul Dravid had fine leadership skills even though he might not be considered in the list of the greatest Indian captains like Sourav Ganguly and MS Dhoni. It is merely because the batting skills of Rahul Dravid overshadowed his captaincy. Former India fast bowler Irfan Pathan considered Rahul Dravid as a good captain due to his clear communication with the players.

Moreover, his records speak for himself. Dravid has led India to 79 ODI matches, from which  they won 42 and lost 33, with a win per cent of 56. He is fifth in the list of most matches as India captain in the ODI format.

Suresh Raina revisited his captaincy days and recalled how Rahul Dravid knew where Kamran Akmal was going to play the ball. Back in 2006, during the 4th ODI, Dravid asked Raina to stand at short-point and lean forward to take a catch.

“I remember the catch against Pakistan which I had taken at point. Rahul Dravid was our captain, Irfan Pathan was the bowler and Kamran Akmal was batting. There was a rule at that time to keep catching fielders in the 15 yards. So Rahul bhai asked me will you stand at point? I said ‘yes please tell me where to stand’. He said lean forward and be ready to take a catch,” Raina told Kapil Dev in an interview for ABP News.

Irfan Pathan delivered the ball outside the off-stump, to which, a tempted Kamral Akmal offered a drive but the ball ended straight into the hands of Raina as Dravid predicted.

“The moment Irfan delivered the next ball, Akmal smashed it hard, I just saw the ball and it came straight into my hands. The thing that impressed me most was that Rahul bhai knew it that a catch might come there and it came in the next delivery,” Raina said.

Raina and Rahul also built a match-winning partnership in the match as India won the game with five wickets to spare.
