Former Indian off-spinner Ramesh Powar has been appointed as the head coach of the Indian Women’s cricket team till the T20 World Cup in 2019. The former spinner was elected as the interim coach of the women’s team last month. It was after the resignation of Tushar Arothe. The former coach had differences of opinions with some of the senior players. Hence he decided to step down.

It was under his tenure that the women’s team underwent a camp at the National Cricket Academy (NCA). Meanwhile, the BCCI also invited other applicants for the post of the head coach simultaneously. The 40-year-old Powar was also one of the applicants for the post of the head coach. A report in the Hindu had stated that the BCCI had shortlisted a total of 6 candidates and Powar was one of them.

The board decided to give Powar an extension in his tenure. It was learnt that the role of the Cricket Advisory Committee wasn’t clear during the process of appointment. Meanwhile, Rajkumar Sharma who was the childhood coach of current Indian skipper Virat Kohli was also one of the candidates who was shortlisted for the job.

Powar will be succeeding Tushar Arothe. It was cited that Arothe had personal reasons. However, reports earlier suggested that some of the senior players had differences of opinion with his coaching technique. Purnima Rau was the head coach before Arothe. She was made the coach ahead of the Women’s World Cup last year. It is the 3rd change in coaching personnel in the last year and a half.

The tour of Sri Lanka will be the first assignment for Powar as the head coach. The T20 World Cup is slated to be played in West Indies from 9th November. The Indian colts are slated to play New Zealand, Pakistan, Australia and one of the teams who will qualify from the group stage.
