Match-Fixing in the Ranji Trophy selection has come to the fore.

The North East team of the Ranji Trophy has come under the scanner of corruption. There are reporting emerging that the brokers have contacted the state selectors to pick their known contacted players. The brokers have offered a hefty amount of INR five to six lakhs to include players of their choice.

Thus, the Sikkim Cricket Association has come under the radar. Sikkim cricket chief Lobzang Tenzing has received messages from agents.

Meanwhile, the board’s anti-corruption chief has put the responsibility on the shoulders of the state associations to deal with the charges of corruption with all the guile. However, this is not the first time that such cases have come to the fore.

“Selection process is the state board’s responsibility. If they want to take any action against those offering them bribes, it’s their call and they can take it themselves,” Shekhawat said while talking to the Indian Express.

The Anti Corruption Unit chief also demanded some clarity in the charges of the new constitution

“That constitution provides for corrective mechanism in form of an ombudsman. He/she will look into it and he/she will take corrective action,” Shekhawat explained.

Meanwhile, SCA chief Lobzang Tenzing has received messages on his Whatsapp number in which the broker is offering a hefty amount to bribe him. In fact, there are nine new teams in the coming season and thus the brokers are trying to get their contacted players into the side.

“Sadly, a lot of dalals (brokers) are hovering around in this part of the world. We have no experience in picking players. Chances of corruption seeping in are very high. It’s a kind of tsunami that we can’t handle. We are a virgin land, and it seems like all the exploiters are eying their opportunities here,” he said.

Thus, the SCA chief said that such bribed players can end up in the squad, which can hamper other deserving player’s chances in the Ranji Trophy.

“It’s a good concept but in such a corrupt environment, I fear we might end up with 7-8 of them in our dressing room. It’s better if we stick to our players and they get thrashed. At least they’ll come of age,” he added.

On the other hand, Shekhawat has denied receiving any official complaint regarding the same.

Here is the Whatsapp chat between a broker and SCA chief.
