India opener, Shikhar Dhawan, has been deemed fit to be part of the first Test match against South Africa, confirmed BCCI on Wednesday. However, the board also revealed that all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja is down with a fever.
First talking of Dhawan, he was doubtful for the first Test after it was confirmed that he had an issue with his ankle. Reports went on to confirm that he had been ruled out, but the left-handed batsman has recovered well in time to be fit for the game.
This also means that he will be opening the innings with Murali Vijay in the first Test. It would have been KL Rahul who would have opened the innings had Dhawan was deemed unfit, but now, Rahul will warm the bench.
Coming to Jadeja, the board’s release mentioned that he would be monitored for next 48 hours before a decision will be taken on his availability.
Should Jadeja be deemed fit on the morning of the first Test, would play or else, Ravichandran Ashwin might get a place in playing XI.
Looking at the conditions in South Africa, captain Virat Kohli is expected to go with only one off Jadeja and Ashwin. Jadeja is expected to get the nod, subject to his fitness.
The first Test of the series starts on January 5 in Cape Town.
The South African team also confirmed that Dale Steyn would not play the first Test. A fit-again Faf du Plessis will walk in the playing XI taking over as captain. He is expected to replace Temba Bavuma in the middle order.
