Former India opener Gautam Gambhir has opined that Royal Challengers Bangalore did not deserve to be in the playoffs. RCB’s journey in the ongoing IPL 2020 came to an end on Friday with a crushing 6-wicket loss at the hands of SunRisers Hyderabad in the Eliminator.

Having won seven of their first ten games, RCB had entered the playoffs on the back of four consecutive losses. The Virat Kohli-led side sealed the last playoffs spot ahead of Kolkata Knight Riders on the basis of a better Net Run Rate (NRR). Following RCB’s loss to Delhi Capitals in their final league game, Kohli had said that his team deserved to be in the next stage because of the good cricket it had played.

Gautam Gambhir on RCB’s playoffs qualification:

Gautam Gambhir slammed Kohli for his comment after the game against Delhi as he said the side didn’t deserve to be in the playoffs. The batting legend, who guided KKR to two IPL titles, pointed out that RCB lost their last 5 games on the trot, adding that they were lucky to win the Super Over eliminator against Mumbai Indians.

“You can keep saying ‘we qualified for the playoffs and we deserved to qualify for the playoffs’, absolutely not. RCB actually never deserved to qualify for the playoffs,” Gautam Gambhir told ESPNcricinfo.

“If you see the last four or five games, and even that one Super Over against Mumbai Indians, they were very fortunate that Navdeep Saini bowled that over brilliantly. Otherwise they didn’t have a great season. From the batting point of view and the bowling,” he added.
