The movie based on India’s miraculous triumph in the 1983 World Cup will hit the theatres on 30 August next year.
Bollywood superstar Ranveer Singh, who is currently enjoying all the praise he is getting for his brilliant acting in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Padmaavat’, will play the role of World Cup winning captain Kapil Dev in the much-awaited movie. The film will be directed by Kabir Khan and is named ’83’.
India was one of the underdogs in the 1983 World Cup which consisted of eight teams. However, the Kapil Dev-led side defied all the odds to qualify for the final where they were up against the mighty West Indies, who had won the previous two editions of the tournament.
But to everyone’s utter surprise, India stunned the West Indies to win the game and lift their maiden World Cup title.
After being asked to bat first, India could put up a modest total of 183 against the team that arguably boasted the world’s best bowling attack comprising Andy Roberts, Malcolm Marshall, Joel Garner and Michael Holding.
At 57 for two and their talismanic batsman Viv Richards looking in his elements, the West Indies were looking destined to complete a hat-trick of titles.
However, the match turned on its head when Kapil Dev famously ran about 20 yards (18 m) to take a catch to end Richard’s 27-ball 33 runs knock. India went on to dismiss their far superior opponents for 140, winning by 43 runs and completing one of the most stunning upsets in cricket history.
Noted film critic and trade analyst Taran Adarsh took to Twitter to share the news.

Director Kabir Khan had earlier talked about the film, confirming Ranveer would play the lead role in the movie.
“Audience knows he is Ranveer and he is going to play the role of Kapil Dev in the film. Today, there is technology to make Ranveer look exactly like him, but that is not the attempt. He needs to get the persona of Dev and yet retain his identity as Ranveer. We want the audience to see and enjoy Ranveer playing Dev,” he had told PTI.
“We will be shooting mostly in London; the whole story is what happened in London. We can’t shoot for seven-eight days at Lord’s; it is not possible. But we do have the permission in place to shoot there. The whole cricket community from all over the world, whether it is the ICC or BCCI is helping. It is such a celebratory story about cricket that any cricketing body would like to support it,” he had added.
