There is absolutely little clarity over whether the T20 World Cup will take place this year or not. The coronavirus pandemic has brought the entire world to a standstill. Cricket is one of the worst hit games as the entire summer of the game looks set to be cancelled.

Every international and major domestic events are currently suspended due to the pandemic. And the way things are unfolding at the moment, it looks like the tournaments which are still a few months away could get affected too. There are doubts over this year’s T20 World Cup, scheduled to take place in Australia in October-November.

In the wake of the outbreak, Australia have sealed its borders for six months till September 30 to deal with the crisis. There is now a growing feeling that the World Cup could be postponed to next year. But in case the tournament goes ahead as scheduled, former West Indies batsman Ricardo Powell believes that West Indies and India are the favourites to win the title.

In an exclusive chat with Cricket Addictor, Ricardo Powell said that while Australia are also playing good cricket, West Indies and India remain the top two favourites for the tournament.

“As a West Indian, I will always back West Indies. Not only because of the kind of the players they have but also because of the records over the years in T20Is,” said Ricardo Powell.

“You have lot of talented players in India as well. With IPL, that’s always a plus for them going into any World Cup. Australia has always been playing well. But I will put my money on West Indies and India,” he added.

West Indies are the defending champions of the tournament, having won it in 2016. Incidentally, they had dumped India out of the last T20 World Cup by beating the Men in Blue in the semifinal before beating England in the final.
