As they say, ‘Germans never die and rise from the blushes’, the phrase was yet again evident when they produced a thrilling finish to the Group F game of the ongoing 2018 FIFA World Cup against Sweden – to keep their hopes alive in the tournament.

They were staring at a possible elimination when Ola Toivonen gave Sweden the lead in the first half with a terrific chip over the goalkeeper on Saturday (June 23) night.

It was dire a situation for the defending champions Germany from there on. Germany dominated possession and passes by a big margin.

However, they went into the second half with a goal down. A loss would have meant the end of the road for Germany. Even a draw would have kept them in a tricky situation.

But, the never say die attitude of the Germans handed them a sensational victory in the final seconds of the riveting match.

Marco Reus equalized for Germany early on in the first half. It was an impressive sign for the Germans. They played a terrific brand of football.

In addition, in an attempt to play attacking football they were found napping due to some defensive lapses. It all looked destined to finish as a draw until Germany got a free kick in the fourth minute of the added injury time.

It was Toni Kroos, who curved the ball beautifully and thumped it on to the top of the right side of the net. Celebrations knew no bounds for Germany as they got away from a really tricky situation.

A draw might not have been enough in the end. Hence, the victory was quite important.

Germany will now face the Korea Republic in their final group game. And one can expect them to win that match.

It also makes the clash between Mexico and  Sweden that more interesting. A win for both Sweden and Germany will keep them the three teams on same points. The teams with the best goal difference will go through.

Meanwhile, Team India opener Rohit Sharma who watched the match tweeted after the exciting finish.

Rohit congratulated Germany and Kroos for a breathtaking goal which kept Germany’s hopes alive in the World Cup.

“Great composure under pressure by the Deutschland. Brave finish by @ToniKroos #Madridist,” he wrote.
