Underfire Sri Lanka begins Proteas tour on high

No one in hundred lives would have thought Sri Lanka would get past the line. As they were staring down the barrel, South Africa was all but getting close on a win. However, fate had planned a different story. Needing 304 runs to win the match, Sri Lanka didn’t begin well – losing three wickets for 52 and was reeling at 110 for five at one stage. With Dhananjaya De Silva and Perera at the crease, the chances of the visitors winning from there looked bleak.

But, they didn’t lose hope and kept scoring at will. As the sessions progressed, they were closing in on the target – putting pressure back on the South Africans. Later, De Silva got out on 48, whereas, they further lost four wickets inside 20 runs – the scorecard read 226 for nine.

What happened next was surreal. Sri Lanka, who entered the contest as underdogs were looking at another overseas defeat. Perera then took the onus on himself and began with the onslaught. While Fernando, on the other end, was saving his wicket. It was a matter of time before the pair created history – helping the team win the Test from such a dire situation.
