The race of being the best in the world is primarily between the four international captains – Australia’s Steven Smith, India’s Virat Kohli, New Zealand’s Kane Williamson and England’s Joe Root.

The quartet has managed to move ahead of their contemporaries with their extraordinary exploits, giving rise to a never-ending debate over who is the best batsmen in the world at the moment.

The jury is still out on deciding the best of the generation and former South Africa skipper Kepler Wessels has now given his views on it. Wessels, who also played for Australia, refrained from picking the best of the lot but explained what makes the four batsmen better than the rest. The 60-year old called Kohli more adventurous than the other three before terming Smith phenomenal.

“Look it’s always difficult to compare players because they play under different conditions, in different circumstances and also for different teams. They all have been superb in modern day cricket. But Kohli is more adventurous probably than the other three. Smith is just phenomenal in the way he puts runs together at the crease, Root is very correct in his approach and as is Williamson,” Kepler Wessels was quoted as saying by CricketNext.

Wessels further backed Kohli to find his way out to deal with the South African pacers in the ongoing series. After entering the series on the back of one century and two double centuries, Kohli failed to live up to expectations in the first Test, scoring just five and 28, as India lost the game by 72 runs.

“Well, the South Africans will definitely target him in that fourth stumps channel outside off stump and get that ball to bounce. They feel they have got a chance there to get him out early in the innings. You know he is a good player, and he will find his way out to counter that,” Wessels said.
