SA vs IND 2018: Twitter Reacts As Umpires Call For Lunch With India Needing Just 2 Runs To Win

The second One-Day international between India and South Africa was looking primed for an usual end. India were just two runs short while chasing before the on-field umpire shouted something that took each player on the ground by surprise. And the players had every reason to be taken aback by the umpire’s word as he surprisingly called lunch just when the game was on the verge of being decided.

What was even more baffling that the umpires could not wait for just two more runs even though the Indian team was earlier given four more overs to finish off the chase. It was  a decision that took everyone by surprise as the commentators did not refrain from criticism the decision while most of the fans left the stadium. The players finally came to the ground after a 40-minute break to complete the formalities.

But while the umpires just followed the rule books, many including some former cricketers feel that common sense should have prevailed.

Here are some reactions to the baffling decision:

Meanwhile, India chased down the modest 119-run target with utmost ease in the 21st over. India began the chase shakily as Rohit Sharma departed for just 15 before Shikhar Dhawan (51) and Virat Kohli (46) stitched together an unbeaten stand of 94 to take the team home.

Earlier in the day, Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav ran through the South African lineup to bowl them out for a paltry 118 in the 33rd over. Chahal picked up his maiden five-wicket haul, finishing with 5 for 22 while Kuldeep finished with 3 for 20.

An avid cricket lover, I just love this game more than anything. Writing about cricket keeps me closer to the game.
