Sanjay Manjrekar’s hopes of commentating in the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) looks as good as over. The former India batsman was sensationally sacked by the BCCI earlier this year in March. The BCCI had removed him just before the ODI series against South Africa which was eventually called off in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

Last month, Sanjay Manjrekar requested the BCCI to take him back as a commentator for the upcoming IPL which will take place between September 19 and November 10. But the BCCI is reportedly not keen on rehiring him. According to reports, the Indian cricket board has sent mails to all the commentators to be ready for the IPL but snubbed Sanjay Manjrekar.

Several media outlets have suggested that his fate depends on BCCI president Sourav Ganguly. The reports have also suggested that his infamous ‘bits and pieces cricketer’ comment for Ravindra Jadeja was not the main reason behind his sacking. Sanjay Manjrekar also had apologised for his comment during last year’s World Cup.

Is this the real reason behind the sacking?

Well, it looks like Sourav Ganguly is the man who is not at all happy with Sanjay Manjrekar. The former Mumbai cricketer is known for delivering bold statements which might have hurt his cause further. After the Ravindra Jadeja controversy in the World Cup, he was also involved in a bitter on-air feud with fellow commentator Harsha Bhogle.

And with his fate depending pretty much on Ganguly, Sanjay Manjrekar is unlikely to be seen in the commentary box anytime soon. The reason behind Ganguly’s displeasure might be the incident that took place during last year’s World Cup. Ganguly was not at all impressed with one of Manjrekar’s tweet during the tournament and had hit back at him with a cryptic tweet.

It started when Manjrekar took to Twitter to take a sly dig at Ganguly. Manjrekar took a shot at Sourav Ganguly by saying that the former India captain did not let other commentators speak much in the commentary box, writing:

“Always happy when Sourav Ganguly is in commentary. You get to relax not just in between commentary stints but during it too.”

Well, it did not take Manjrekar long to realise that he had locked horns with the wrong person. Ganguly trolled Manjrekar in a brutal way, writing:

“His comments on Twitter is a bit like his batting meaningless and and lack of ideas .. may be just an attention seeker…in the negative way ?”

The tweet from Ganguly made it pretty clear that he does not share a very cordial relationship with Manjrekar. And going by the recent turn of events, one can say that Manjrekar is unlikely to be back as a commentator any time soon.
