Andre Russell, on Sunday, once again starred with the bat and ball as Kolkata Knight Riders returned to winning ways. The two-time champions thrashed Mumbai Indians by 34 runs to end their six-match losing streak. Kolkata finally promoted Russell in the batting order and he did not disappoint. The allrounder scored an unbeaten fifty to power the Knight Riders to a mammoth 232 for 2 – their highest-ever score against Mumbai Indians and the highest score of the season so far.
Chris Lynn and Shubman Gill gave Knight Riders a solid start by adding 96 runs for the first wicket. From thereon, it was all about Russell as he came out to bat at number three. The hard-hitting opener initially took his time but there was no looking back once he had his eyes set. He eventually remained unbeaten on 80 from just 40 deliveries. The knock contained 6 fours and 8 sixes.
In reply, Mumbai Indians came up with a good fight. In-form allrounder Hardik Pandya slammed 91 from just 34 balls but Kolkata managed to restrict Mumbai to 198 for 7 to register a much-needed win. Andre Russell made the difference with the ball too as he finished the game as his team’s most economical bowler. In 4 overs, he conceded just 25 runs while picking the wickets of Evin Lewis and Suryakumar Yadav.
Coincidentally, Russell’s starring display with the bat and ball came just hours before he could celebrate his 31st birthday on April 29. His wife Jassym Lora, who was in the stands, then interviewed her star husband in the post match ceremony.
In a candid chat with his wife Jassym, Russell said that whenever he walks inside the ground, his aim is to impress his wife with his batting skills.
“Special night for me as well. It’s my birthday. I always feel pressure because I want to make sure the fans are happy and I want to impress my beautiful wife every match,” Russell said while interacting with his wife Jassym.
“It’s an emotional feeling. It’s the last game of the season in Kolkata. We knew that we had to leave the fans who have been giving us great support over the last six days with a bang. We surely did, won by 34 runs,” he added.
And after the interview, Jassym took to Instagram to post some steamy photos of her with her husband as she wished him a happy birthday again.
“Oh my sweet husband, I’m not just wishing for you to have a great birthday, I’m praying that you’re blessed with your heart’s desires.! Happy birthday Mi Amor!,” she wrote while adding the following photos.
