Shoaib Akhtar is known for making controversial comments and the former Pakistan pacer has done it once again. The postponement of this year’s T20 World Cup seems to have made him angry and he is not squandering any opportunity to take aim at BCCI.
Earlier this week, the ICC announced that the marquee event has been postponed due to the coronavirus situation. The postponement was pretty much on the cards and did not really come as a surprise. Cricket Australia had, as early as in June, made it clear that the chances of hosting the tournament are not realistic.
Shoaib Akhtar, however, is not at all impressed with the decision and has pointed his guns towards the BCCI. The former cricketer dragged in the ‘Monkeygate’ controversy to indicate that the BCCI gets preferential treatment. He said that BCCI’s influence ‘saved’ Harbhajan Singh during the controversy surrounding Australian cricketer Andrew Symonds.
In a shocking tirade against the Indian board, the former Pakistan international also said that India gets easy wickets. He also took a dig at Australia as he questioned their ethics.
“Sometimes they get easy wickets in Melbourne, at times someone calls another person a monkey but gets saved, the talk goes to boycotting the series. I am asking the Australians, where are their ethics?” Shoaib Akhtar told Geo Cricket on a YouTube show.
He was referring to the infamous incident that took place in the Sydney Test in 2008. Harbhajan Singh was accused of hurling racial taunts at former Australia all-rounder Andrew Symonds but was later cleared of the charges.
“You made kids cry for scratching a cricket ball and they got away by calling someone a monkey. They [BCCI] said to end the series and they [Australian Board] said no such incident happened. Are these your moral grounds, did you not get the sounds on the mic,” added Shoaib Akhtar.
Before the T20 World Cup’s postponement, the Asia Cup was postponed too. Speaking about that, Shoaib Akhtar said that the tournaments could have taken place as per schedule.
“Asia Cup could have definitely happened, it would have been a great chance for India and Pakistan to play against each other. There are many reasons behind this. I don’t want to get into that.
“T20 World Cup could have also happened, but I had already said this earlier that they won’t let it happen. IPL should not be damaged, let the World Cup go to hell,” he said.
