The skipper of the India A side Shreyas Iyer stated the fact that not getting picked for the Team India led by Virat Kohli despite consistent performance in the domestic circuit and for India A runs into his mind and affects his performances on multiple occasions.

The middle-order batsman Iyer has been scoring heavily in the domestic cricket. However, he is yet to break into the Test side.

“It is really tough to be patient. When you perform consistently, get runs and then don’t get into the (senior) team, it runs into your mind. And, when you face quality bowling at the top level, your performance keeps fluctuating. So, you need to keep yourself focused and, as I said, it affects you at times,” Iyer told reporters.

Iyer had a piece of advice from Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the former was picked in the national side for the shorter formats after amassing runs at a pace. He was part of the Indian squad for the One-day International series against Sri Lanka in India last year.

Iyer further featured in the six-match ODI series against South Africa which India won by a 5-1 margin. He last played an ODI for India against the Proteas in February this year.

Iyer scored 317 runs for India A against New Zealand A. It included a brilliant century. He was picked in the Delhi Daredevils‘ squad in the Indian Premier League (IPL) three years ago.

Shreyas Iyer cherishes captaincy of the franchise during edition eleven after Gautam Gambhir stepped down from his post following a horrible run.

The promising star, Iyer further added that he loves captaining any side. He feels that it gets the best out of him and the team under pressure situations.

“I really love the captaincy role. Whenever I get this role (captaincy), my character and attitude totally changes, and I see to it that I try and get the best out of myself as well as the team in pressure situations,” said Iyer.

The quality batter also led India A to a 1-0 series victory against South Africa A very recently. He enjoys treating people with respect as a skipper. However, he said that one should not misuse the position.

How long it will take Shreyas Iyer to break into the Test side of Team India led by Virat Kohli, the time will only decide. As of now, he looks a premium contender to don the white jersey.
