Team India has been long fazed with a problem when it comes to the N0. 4 batter. The long-standing issue was that who should bat at number four for the Men in Blue? Shreyas Iyer now seems to have appeared as the answer to this question. Iyer scored a brilliant century against New Zealand in the first ODI on Wednesday at Seddon Park in Hamilton.

Iyer scored his maiden ODI century for the Men in Blue, and has made his contention for the number four spot much more stronger. His innings included 11 fours and a six as Iyer scored all over the Seddon Park.

The right-handed batsman’s scintillating knock helped India post a mammoth target of 348 runs for the Kiwis to chase. Iyer has now proved to be India’s concrete number four option with some brilliant knocks in international cricket over recent times.

Team India were dominant in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 throughout the tournament. The only challenge they faced was when the Kiwi bowlers rattled through the opening order of Indian batting and India had no answers to it.

The issue that the world knew was exposed by the Black Caps in the semis and India eventually suffered losing another ICC Tournament.

Now, by going all this, India have now been in a long search of players to fill in the number four spot. Iyer might just well prove to be the jewel in the crown for India. Scoring a fine century in the first ODI against New Zealand, Iyer became the first batsman to score a century for the Men in Blue at Number four after 464 days. The last guy to score a century on the same position was Ambati Rayudu. He scored a century against the Windies in October 2018.

Earlier, batting first India put on a huge total in the first innings of the first ODI after losing the toss at Hamilton. Apart from Iyer, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul played fine knocks and scored half-centuries. Debutants Prithvi Shaw and Mayank Agarwal gave a solid start to the visitors after having a brilliant 50-run partnership for the first wicket.

Besides, Jadhav came in towards the end and played a quickfire knock to end the innings on a high.
