Shubman Gill arguably had his best outing while opening the batting in IPL. In six innings that he has opened, the 20-year old has mustered 236 runs at 47.20 alongside three half-centuries and the best score of 76. Gill has also maintained a robust strike rate of 140 during this time. The two-time champions would be expecting to put a better show this edition after finishing sixth last season, owing to their inconsistent batting performances.

Shubman Gill said firmly that his role would be the same of what he did in the last season, which is to open the innings. Gill added that his part is to anchor the innings and set up a foundation for the middle-order and that his approach would remain the same regardless of his opening partner.

My role will be the same as what I did at the end of last season when I was opening… To guide the whole innings till the end. That would be my role if I open and neither will it change if I open with a conventional batsman or a [pinch-hitter like] Narine. I don’t think [being the senior opener] will really change my batting mindset,” the 20-year old told ESPN Cricinfo.

The right-handed batsman, who has hardly batted lower down the order, did so in IPL 2018 and the initial phase of IPL 2019, stated it help him grow as a batsman. The Punjab batsman believes that it helped him grew as a batsman and look at the game from different angles, which he rarely did before.

It was a game-changing experience for me because I’ve never batted that [low] down the order. It really helped me grow as a batsman if I look at it that way, because it helped me look at the game from different angles and understand different aspects of the game,” he added.
