Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has shared his two cents on calls of Virat Kohli needing a break from cricket after his ongoing horrendous run in the IPL 2022 and said that Kohli cannot afford to take a break during the upcoming Indian team matches.
Kohli suffered his third golden duck in the ongoing Indian Premier League season 15, as he was caught by Kane Williamson off Jagadeesha Suchith’s bowling during the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB)’s IPL 2022 match against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on May 8 at the Wankhede Stadium.
The right-handed batter, who holds the record for most runs in a single season of Indian Premier League- 973 in IPL 2016, has managed just 216 runs in 12 matches for RCB at an average of 19.63 and strike rate of 111.34 in the ongoing IPL 2022.
You Can’t Take A Break For An India Game: Sunil Gavaskar On Virat Kohli
This ongoing poor run of form has led to experts and fans saying that the ace India batter needs to take some rest to get his mind off the game and then come back rejuvenated as the Indian team is set to embark on a busy schedule post the IPL 2022.
However, Sunil Gavaskar has a different opinion saying that if Kohli wanted a break, he should have sat out the IPL 2022, and he cannot take a break from cricket when the Indian team is playing.
“As long as the break doesn’t mean he is missing India matches. India matches should be No. 1 priority. It’s as simple as that. I think the thing is that if you don’t play, how do you get your form back? Sitting in the change room, it’s not going to get your form back. The more you play, the more chances you getting your form back,” Gavaskar said while being on-air for Star Sports on Sunday.
Furthermore, Gavaskar said the whole of India wants Kohli to return to form and score runs for India.
“You ask all over India, you want everybody in India who follows the game will say ‘we want the form for India’. Right? So you can’t take a break for an India game. You want Kohli to start scoring runs for India. All of us want that,” Gavaskar added.
