Former India batsman and a stalwart of Tamil Nadu Cricket, Subramaniam Badrinath called it quits from all forms of the game today with immediate effect. The 38-year-old veteran cricketer announced his retirement through an organized press conference at the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association headquarters at the Cheapauk in Chennai.

“This has certainly not been an easy decision to be honest. I’ve been pondering over it. I’ve mentioned it to Mr. Kasi Viswanathan. Somehow my hand didn’t go into penning the letter over the last year. I don’t know why. But having turned 38 yesterday, I decided it was about the right time,” Badrinath told reporters,” Badrinath was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.

He has been a star player for Tamil Nadu cricket. He has represented India in just 10 international matches between 2010 to 2011. He scored an impressive half-century in his debut Test innings against South Africa in Kolkata. However, he failed to score big in the next three innings led to his ouster. Back then India had a strong middle order. Hence he never managed to return to international cricket. He played 7 ODI’s and a solitary T20I.

Subramaniam Badrinath was one of the most technically sound batsmen in India

He was one of the most technically sound batsmen in the domestic circuit. He was more of an accumulator of runs. He made his debut for Tamil Nadu back in 2000-01. He scored 636 runs in 7 matches which led to a national call-up. However, India had the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman and Sourav Ganguly in the middle order. Hence it was always difficult for him to make a comeback.

However, he went on to pile runs for Tamil Nadu in domestic cricket. He played for other teams between 2014-17. Badrinath captained Vidarbha in a season while he also played one season for Hyderabad. He has scored 10245 runs in his first-class career from 145 games. The runs have come at a great average of 54.49 including 32 centuries.
