Suranga Lakmal Involved In A Heated Argument With An Individual At Airport Upon Landing In Sri Lanka After India Tour

Sri Lanka fast bowler Suranga Lakmal, who recently bid adieu to international cricket during the two-Test series in India, was seen getting into a heated argument with another person at the Bandaranaike International Airport when the Sri Lankan team landed at home after the tour of India.

Lakmal, who played 66 Tests, 84 ODIs, and 11 T20Is for Sri Lanka from 2009-2022, called time on his international career after the second Test between India and Sri Lanka which was played at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, which was a day-night Test match. It was not the preferred farewell for Lakmal, as Sri Lanka lost both the Test matches and the series 0-2.

Suranga Lakmal also captained Sri Lanka in five Test matches and led the team to their maiden Test win over West Indies at the Kensington Oval ground, becoming the first Asian nation to win a Test at the venue.

I Expected Cricket Lovers Will Treat Our Team Members Properly: Suranga Lakmal

However, Lakmal’s welcome at home when the team arrived in Sri Lanka at the Bandaranaike International Airport from India earlier yesterday was far from decent as video footage showed the fast bowler arguing with an individual after the person criticized the national team for their poor performance in India.

Speaking to the media after the incident, Lakmal said that the particular individual was not saying good things about the Sri Lanka national team and that he explained the performance of the team on the India tour where Sri Lanka was white-washed in both the T20Is (0-3) and Tests (0-2).

“When this particular person made a statement criticizing the team for losing the matches in India, I explained to him on the spot, it was just another incident. Such incidents are unavoidable. Hereafter I won’t be playing for the country, but I expected cricket lovers will treat our team members properly,” Lakmal said.

Lakmal will now fly to England to play for the Derbyshire county cricket club which signed him up for two years. Lakmal made his debut for Sri Lanka in December 2009 and largely performed a holding role in limited-overs cricket, picking up 109 wickets from 86 ODIs and eight wickets from 11 T20Is.
