The 2020 T20 World Cup is slated to get underway from October 18 to November 15 in Australia, but considering the novel coronavirus pandemic situation, the marquee tournament might be postponed to make way for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020, feels former Australia captain Mark Taylor.
IPL 2020 was originally scheduled to begin from March 29 but it was first deferred to April 15 before being postponed indefinitely as the parent body has been stubborn on their wait and watch policy. More so, because, the cricket board might incur a loss of Rs. 4000 crore if the lucrative tournament.
T20 World Cup likely to be postponed, opening door for IPL: Mark Taylor
2020 T20 World Cup will be a 15-team tournament with logistics required to be in place way before and a lot of arrangements needed to be made, which makes it unlikely for the tournament to commence this year feels Mark Taylor. He, however, said if the IPL takes place the onus of traveling will be on the players and not the cricket board.
“I think that’s the most likely scenario (postponement of T20 World Cup) because 15 teams planning to come to Australia between October and November, 45 matches over a proposed seven venues, national travel is going to extremely difficult in the world we are living in,” Taylor told Channel Nine Sports.
“14 days isolation before that makes it even harder. More than likely that event is not going ahead. So if the ICC decides to postpone the event that will open the door for the BCCI to say that we will have our IPL is India which actually puts the onus back on individuals then rather than nations moving whole teams over to a certain country,” he added.
