Former India coach Ravi Shastri will return to commentary duties with the Indian Premier League (IPL 2022) edition, which was also confirmed by the official broadcasters of the cash-rich tournament, Star Sports. He called the conflict of interest clause in the BCCI constitution ‘stupid’ as it was the reason for him having to leave the commentary job after taking up the head coach position of the Indian team.

This will be his return to the mic after 5 long years, as he had to leave his lush commentating job after he was named the Indian team head coach after the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy, after the sour departure of Anil Kumble who had a disagreement with then captain Virat Kohli.

This was due to the ‘conflict of interest’ clause in the revised BCCI constitution that was drafted by the Committee of Administrators and approved by the court.

Shastri’s tenure was extended in 2019 and his last assignment was the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 tournament. After this, Shastri didn’t ask for an extension and the BCCI had also picked his successor in former India captain Rahul Dravid.

The 59-year-old Shastri made a name for himself behind the mic after his career as a cricketer was over, and fans will once again get to hear the former all-rounder’s booming voice in the commentary box.

Ravi Shastri will now be seen commentating during the Indian Premier League (IPL 2022) edition, but not in English. It has been reported that the official broadcasters of IPL, Star Sports, have hired Shastri to be part of the Hindi commentary panel instead.

Talking about his return to commentary after 5 years, Shastri said during a press conference organised by Star Sports: “This is the 15th edition of the IPL, I did the first 11 years and then thanks to some stupid conflict of interest clause that exists in some stupid constitution that binds us, you could not do the last few seasons.”

The IPL 2022 will begin on Saturday with the opening match between Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
