Former England skipper Alastair Cook, on Monday (September 3), announced that he would bring down curtains on his illustrious career after the conclusion of the ongoing series against India.

His retirement brings an end to a wonderful cricketing career that began with a bang in 2006. In his very first game, he scored a fifty and a century against India in tough conditions of Nagpur. And the left-handed batsman went on to justify the early hype surround him. He is retiring the game as England’s most decorated players in Tests.

Cook has played more Tests, scored more runs and more centuries than any of his compatriots. Currently, he is occupying the sixth position in the list of all-time leading run-scorers in Tests.

Since 2006, he failed to score a century in a calendar year only twice – in 2008 and 2014. Well, Cook will be keen to not extend that list when he dons the jersey for one final time against India at The Oval. A century in his testimonial game would be a fitting end to a glittering career that has taken some beating of late.  In seven innings of the series so far , he has managed just 109 at an average of 15.57.

His constant struggle was the biggest reason behind his decision to retire at an age of just 33.  In his last 28 innings, Cook has only passed 50 three times, yet two of those. But that does not at all undermine his greatness with the bat.
