The latest Indian jersey that the men’s senior team has donned has been an interesting one. While the merchandise has drawn criticisms from plenty of cricketing fans for the effect of sponsorships, it has also rehashed the memories of the 90s. One of the striking features of the jersey is the three stars above the BCCI logo. And the same has been revealed.

The three stars emblazoned on the Indian jersey depict India’s three World Cup victories thus far. India’s maiden World Cup win came in 1983 when Kapil Dev stunned the two-time World Champions West Indies at the Lord’s. Back in 2007, MS Dhoni captained the men in blue to the T20 title in the inaugural edition of the format followed by a 50-over in 2011. It was after 28 years that India captured the 50-over World Cup.

The captain and star batsman Virat Kohli understands that there a billion hopes riding on their shoulders which is why he tries to play responsibly and respect the team’s needs. The 32-year old knows that there is pressure and with that comes focus too. Kohli feels proud to be part of the side that has historically achieved a lot and privileged to play for a team like it.

I know there’s a billion-plus hope always riding on our team. That’s why I try to play with responsibility and with respect to the team’s needs. The pressure’s always on, so my focus has to be too. I feel really proud – for me the Three Stars on the jersey represents what the Indian team is today and how much they have achieved. I feel really honoured to be a part of a team that has won three World Cups,” Kohli said in a virtual conference.

Meanwhile, the Australian team has raced to 374 in their 50 overs in the first ODI against India in Sydney. Australia, who elected to bat first, laid a solid foundation with a 156-run opening partnership. Captain Aaron Finch scored a century and so did Steve Smith followed by Glenn Maxwell’s fireworks that took India’s bowling attack apart. The tourists’ lacklustre display on the field also contributed to that.
