India’s legendary women’s pacer Jhulan Goswami has said that already too much time has gone by and that the time was ripe for a full-fledged women’s Indian Premier League (WIPL) tournament, which will benefit the Indian female cricketers who are making the country proud with their achievements around the globe.
Recently on January 6, Bollywood actress Anushka Sharma officially announced that the biopic of the former India women’s team captain Jhulan Goswami, titled “Chakda Xpress” will go on floors with the actress portraying the titular role. The internet was inundated with articles narrating Jhulan Goswami’s rags-to-riches tale. That day, she completed 20 years in international cricket.
A few days before flying to New Zealand to play a five-match bilateral ODI series and later the World Cup, Goswami in an interview with Sportskeeda spoke about the need for a women’s IPL which should ideally start this year itself.
The Women’s IPL Should’ve Started A Long Time Ago: Jhulan Goswami
Goswami has been named in the Indian women’s squad for the upcoming ICC Women’s World Cup 2022 which will be played in New Zealand itself after the bilateral ODI series culminates. However in her interview, when she was asked whether India winning the World Cup will force BCCI to start a Women’s IPL, Goswami said that it should’ve happened a long time ago.
“It (the Women’s IPL) should’ve started a long time ago. It has got nothing to do with our performance in the World Cup. See how the Women’s Big Bash League and the Women’s T20 Super League have promoted new talent and strengthened the dominance of Australia and England in women’s international cricket. A Women’s IPL can achieve similar results for India. I think the time is ripe,” she said.
She also shed light on her biopic ‘ Chakda Xpress’ and said that the filming of the same will begin soon and the producers will inform all the details to news outlets when the time comes. She also revealed that she will resume work on her autobiography after the World Cup.
