Eoin Morgan became the first England captain to life the World Cup trophy as the hosts beat New Zealand in arguably the greatest final of all time. In the thrilling final at Lord’s, the fortunes swung from one side to another before England managed to win the game due to rule books.

Ben Stokes’ sensational innings of 84 not out from 98 balls rescued England from 86-4 and saw them tie New Zealand’s 241-8. England needed an improbable 15 from the last four balls and managed to score 14 to push the game to the super over.

Stokes and Jos Buttler then managed 15 runs from Trent Boult‘s Super Over after hitting a boundary apiece. Jofra Archer was then given the responsibility to defend the 15 runs. Archer, however, started poorly as he conceded a wide before being hit for a double and a huge six by James Neesham.

The equation was finally down to 2 off the last ball. But New Zealand opener Martin Guptill, who was facing his first ball of the over, managed just one and was run-out while he was trying to take the double. That meant the super over scores were tied, and England won on virtue of having scored more boundaries in the match.

Speaking at the end of the game, Eoin Morgan started by sympathising New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson and his teammates. He then lauded his own teammates as he expressed his delight over the win.

“I’d like to commiserate Kane and his team. The example that they lead is hugely commendable to him and his team. On a tough wicket where everyone found it tough to score. Buttler and Stokes put together a partnership, and I thought that would take us deep, and it did. This has been a four-year- journey – and we find it hard to play on wickets like that,” Eoin Morgan said at the post-match presentation ceremony.

“To get over the line today means the world to us. I was being cooled down by Plunkett, which isn’t a good sign. Some of the support staff – not only the best in our team, but in the world, they really helped. Full credit to the two boys who went out for the super over, given that they were there most recently. Archer just improves every time he goes out there. Really incredible – everyone in the change room today, Willey, Billings, whoever missed out on the squad – I’d like to mention them too.
