Former Australian all-rounder Tom Moody has underlined the reasons behind India’s failure in the most recent ICC tournament. It was precisely a year ago that India suffered their heartbreaking exit from the 2019 World Cup. Virat Kohli’s men lost only one match on their road to the semi-finals of the tournament, finishing the group stage as table-toppers. Despite being firm favourites to emerge victorious in the semi-final against New Zealand, India lost the clash by 18 runs.

One of the issues that the men in blue failed to address seriously is their number four issue. While the top-order flourished more or less throughout the group stage, the middle-order did not face testing times.

Unfortunately, the top-order fared miserably in the knockout game and the middle-order batsmen were left clueless. The Indian management tried plenty of candidates for the number four spot none of who could cement it.

Tom Moody revealed that India had to face the challenge of the expectation of their talent as well as the abundance of it. And Moody feels that sometimes that factor can prove as a burden.

“One of the huge challenges India has to face, they like it or not, is the expectation on their talent. There is no question India has got more talent by a long stretch than any country playing our game. But sometimes that can be a burden,” the former Sunrisers Hyderabad coach told Cricbuzz.

The 54-year old mentioned that when the management has too many options or candidates to choose from, it can hinder the planning. According to Tom Moody, India had that problem during the 2019 World Cup. The former Sri Lankan coach rated India as the firm favourites but could not use their talent to good effect.

“When you have got too many players to choose from you can cloud your thinking and philosophy on how you want to plan, how you feel you need to play to win a particular tournament. The best example according to me was their campaign in England,” Tom Moody maintained.

The South Australian went on to have the feeling that India had peaked a year ago; however, India damaged all their hopes by altering the batting order, management, personnel that lead to confusion amongst the playing group.

“It seems that India was ready to play the tournament 12 months ago but to the lead up to the actual start of the tournament did their very best to sabotage their hopes of winning that tournament by changing batting orders, changing personnel within the batting order, creating uncertainty amongst the whole playing group,” Moody added.
